Recent Accomplishments
The Arizona Interfaith Network (AIN), in collaboration with the Arizona Institute for Public Life (AIPL), had a very productive year in 2005. Listed below are some of the major accomplishments:
- Working together, AIN organizations defeated many bills in the Arizona Legislature that targeted immigrant families. If passed, the bills would have undermined businesses, divided communities, wasted public dollars and degraded law enforcement capabilities.
- YCISC led a successful fight in Yuma County for funding of a neighborhood park in one of the region's poorest communities.
- PCIC’s 1% Campaign for Families and Children was broadly supported by voters electing a new City Council. At its first meeting, the new Council voted $1.5 million to fund important pro-family initiatives including after school programs, youth employment and job training.
- NAICSC provided the leadership for the Sedona City Council to conduct an affordable housing study and to begin implementation of inclusionary zoning.
- EVI successfully lobbied city councils in Scottsdale, Chandler and Apache Junction to adopt stricter regulations of the sale of pseudoephedrine, a building block of methamphetamine.
- VIP, in collaboration with home care providers and Phoenix College, successfully initiated a pilot Respite Care Training Program.
- PCIC worked with Congressman Jim Kolbe to obtain federal funds for JobPath to increase the number of nursing and allied health caregivers.
- NAICSC successfully lobbied the Prescott City Council to fund a public transportation survey and to become the catalyst for addressing transportation issues in the growing tri-city area.
- AIN conducted a Statewide Leaders Meeting on September 15 for 3,000 leaders that was attended by Attorney General Terry Goddard, business leaders, state legislators, local elected officials and five denominational judicatory heads. The event was held at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church and affirmed AIN’s standing as Arizona’s largest and most diverse grassroots organization.
- AIN led Arizona’s participation in the New American Opportunity Campaign, seeking to secure Comprehensive Immigration Reform legislation at the national level.
- AIN organizations conducted hundreds of Institutes of Public Life on major issues impacting Arizona families
