AIN Commends the Senate for Enlightened Immigration Votes

The Arizona Interfaith Network commends the enlightened and courageous Arizona Senators who voted March 17 to defeat five divisive, anti-child, anti-immigrant bills. Our Senators recognized that SB1308, SB1309, SB1405, SB1407 and SB1611 threatened to polarize the state, tear at its social fabric, and damage our economic recovery. Their rejection of this legislation has set Arizona on a more constructive path.

Along with concerned business and community leaders, Arizona Interfaith Network leaders and clergy have worked tirelessly to communicate with Senators on both sides of the aisle about the dangers posed by these bills. Arizona's Senators were fulfilling their office: they listened; they conducted their own research, and they have come to recognize that this approach to immigration does not move Arizona forward. AIN hopes that the Senate can now focus on the real priorities of Arizonans: jobs, and the state's economic recovery.

The Clergy and Leaders of the Arizona Interfaith Network will continue to monitor legislative action until sine die, encouraging Arizona's legislators to resist any similar divisive legislation, and to focus on measures which respect the dignity and the real needs of Arizonans.
